Companies in the news this week are Polycom, McAfee, Damaka, 3CX, TDS, Cisco, Maron Structure Technologies, Enabling Technologies Corp., ShoreTel, Alinean, IBBS, AudioCodes, InnoMedia and Clearcable.
Many observers think the introduction of the Cius tablet means Cisco has Apple and its iPad in its cross hairs. It's far more likely that the company's goal is to solidify and extend its position in the rapidly expanding unified communications market. 
The increasing acceptance of unified communications as a repository of corporate communications tools suggests that the next big battle -- the creation of standards enabling interoperability between products from different vendors -- has arrived. 
Unified communications' fortunes are to a great extent dependent on the ability of systems from different vendors to communicate. An impressive array of important companies -- so far minus Cisco, IBM and Avaya -- have formed the Unified Communications Interoperability Forum.
